TripAdvisor rates the Shoreline Cotttages as the best place to stay in Fort Bragg It's important to note that these cottages are not on the beach, or even on a bluff overlooking the ocean. But the ocean isn't' far away, about a 5 minute walk. People seem to like these cottages because they are quaint, quiet, and some have little kitchens. They are right on Hwy 1. Some people said they were bothered by the highway noise, while others remarked how quiet the area was. The cottages are pet friendly.

1. Loved the small beach with a private feel.
2. Nice view of the beach and ocean from some rooms.

The Negative:
1. Slum of Fort Bragg
2 Old, run down
3. Rude staff
4. No hot water for 3 days.

I think it's safe to tell you that you can do a lot better in Fort Bragg.

The location of the Timber Cove Inn on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean is magnificent. The vast majority of the reviews on Trip Advisor of the Timber Cove Inn rave about the Inn. So, when I saw that there were 10 "Terrible" reviews on Trip Advisor I had to take a look to see what had upset these people. How could so many people love the Timber Cove and yet there be a handful that rated it "Terrible?" As I expected, this is usually the case in these situations, each of the "Terrible" reviewers had either an unpleasant encounter with one of the staff, expectations weren't met, or something went wrong in the room ie heater didn't work, noisy people in room above, roof leaked. One reviewer complained that there was nothing to do. C'mon. You don't select a remote secluded Inn on the Sonoma Coast because you're looking for exciting nightlife. The Timber Cove Inn is a beautiful place for getting away from everything.

Heading north from San Francisco on Hwy 1 you'll drive over 50 miles of coastline before you come to a beach resort. That's Timber Cove in Jenner. So, if you want to be on the beach along the beautiful Sonoma Coast, look for a beach vacation rental. TripAdvisor is a perfect resource for Beach Vacation Rentals along the Sonoma Coast.

Several years ago my wife and I stayed at Ocean Escape, a vacation rental overlooking the ocean and Bodega Bay. The rental is two modular units sitting on a deck with a hot tub. Each of the units, which are rented as a single unit, has a bedroom with a queen bed, a living room, and a dining/kitchen area. Not fancy. Very comfortable. an amazing setting. The approach is via about a mile of gravel road. Pass through a locked gate. You're now on a 500 acre ranch. The Ocean Escape sits several hundred yards back from the bluff above the beach. It's a short walk to the beach that you'll have all to yourself. Kayaks are available for your use to explore the estuary that extends inland several miles. On one of our kayak paddles up the estuary we got to watch two otters as they played in the water and sunned themselves on the shore. This pair was maybe 10 feet from us. One morning we spotted a pair of mountain lions high up on the side of the canyon. And, of course, birds galore. Remember, Bodega Bay was where Hitchcock filmed "Birds." The birds we saw, though, were indifferent to us, beautiful to watch.

I just found another beach resort hotel in Santa Cruz. So, got to run back down the coast a bit to review the Sand and Sea oceanfront beach resort inn above the beach in Santa Cruz. On Trip Advisor I didn't see a single "Terrible" review. This is very unusual. One of the reviewers said that if he won the lottery the Sand & Sea Inn is where he would want to spend the rest of his life.

I find it very interesting that TripAdvisor rates the Sea Breeze as the #2 hotel in Pacifica. Maybe its location right at the water's edge is what gets this ranking. One reviewer describes it as "Not the Hilton." Very true. This is not an elegant beach resort. The Sea Breeze is a 70's motel. The furnishings, the decor are all 70's. Not made to look like the 70's, but is the 70's. I'm thinking that there are so few bad reviews for the Sea Breeze is because people who book this motel know what they're getting,a 70's motel at the edge of the ocean.

The majority of the people who stay at theThe Beach House in Half Moon Bay love the place. Trip Advisor rates the Beach House as #4 of the resorts and hotels in the Half Moon Bay area. The few negative reviews of The Beach House dealt mostly dealt with road noise. Hwy 1 is near this beach resort hotel. Then there's the occasional complaint about no air conditioning. Very few beach resort hotels on the west coast of the United States have air conditioning. In Half Moon Bay the average day time high is 58 degrees. No need for an expensive air conditioning system. Once in a great while there will a weather pattern that brings warmer air to the bay. Combine that with rooms that face west into the setting sun, and it can get warm, even hot. So, open the windows, the doors. Let in the ocean air. Oh, the grumps say it's too noisy with the windows and doors open.

It tells you that Monterey is often foggy or overcast and that the Santa Cruz side has more sun. Check out the most recent reviews on Trip Advisor. Beach lovers love the Seascape. If you're looking for a beach wedding, you won't find a better more romantic oceanfront beach resort hotel than the Seascape.

The Best Western Beach Resort on Monterey Bay is the only resort/hotel near Monterey that I consider an oceanfront beach resort hotel. Monterey has many very nice hotels on the bay with great views. However, if beach is what you want in Monterey, then the Best Western Beach Resort is for you. On Trip Advisor I saw that the majority of the reviewers found the Monterey Beach Resort to be "Very Good" to "Excellent." A little surprised to see over 65 reviewers rating the Monterey Beach Resort as "Poor" to "Terrible," I took a closer look at what they had to say. One reviewer said the crashing surf made too much noise. Another reviewer, with a dog, said the room smelled like dog pee. There was the usual grumbling about a conflict with a staff person. I find the rates for a beach resort hotel to be very reasonable. Keep this in mind. If you want to be on a beach near Monterey, this is the place to stay. But, if you want an oceanfront beach resort hotel on Monterey Bay. And you want sunshine and beach ambience, then you go to the sunny side of Monterey Bay - the Santa Cruz area. My choice there is the Seascape Oceanfront Beach Resort

Pacific Grove Beach Hotels - Seven Gables

You don't think of Pacific Grove as a beach town, but it does have a beach and a scenic coastline. I love this town. We've rented a house here and enjoyed a peaceful week walking and biking. The wharf area of Monterey is an easy walk or bike along Monterey Bay. Yet, in Pacific Grove, you are away from the touristy crowds in Monterey. If you want to stay in a lovely place with a view of the bay and the tiny beach, I recommend the Seven Gables. On Trip Advisor I didn't find a single "Terrible" review. That's pretty amazing because even the very expensive resorts on 17 Mile Drive have a couple of terrible reviews. There was one "Poor" review. That reviewer didn't like the way the Seven Gables was decorated. There are a couple of other inns and hotels that have views of the bay and are close to the small beach. I just couldn't bring myself to call them "beach hotels." If the Seven Gables isn't for you, there's lot's of very nice places to stay in Pacific Grove. This is a village where its own ambience takes precedent over its proximity to the beach.

Pebble Beach Hotels - The Inn at Spanish Bay

I haven't stayed at the Inn at Spanish Bay along 17 Mile Drive, but I have been in the lobby. I loved the ambience of the furnishings and the great view of the Pacific Ocean. As I mentioned in an earlier review, few, if any, people come here for the ocean. They come here to play golf on the famous Pebble Beach golf courses. You can expect to pay from $600 to $900 a night for the privilege of staying here. The reviewers on Trip Advisor generally had a great experience at the Inn. The few who wrote otherwise had a bad experience with staff or management, or thought the furnishings weren't up to par with the price paid for a room.

I don't suppose anyone goes to The Lodge at Pebble Beach for a beach experience. People go there to play golf in a beautiful oceanfront setting. Treebones is a village of yurts set WAY high above the Pacific Ocean. They are on the mountain side of Hwy 1. This means that you may get some of the noise coming up from Hwy 1. Most of the reviewers on Trip Advisor love Treebones. Just keep in mind that yurts are just very fancy tents. We've stayed in a yurt in Hawaii and loved it. Also, being on the Big Sur coastline means that you could have fog, wind, rain. Nice if you're in a big lodge cuddled up around a roaring fireplace.

The San Simeon Pines has very mixed reviews. Overall,Trip Advisor. rates this Cambria oceanfront inn as #24 of 34 hotels in Cambria. So far the beach hotels I've been reviewing in Cambria have had pretty consistent ratings of "very good" to "excellent." This inn has some very contrasting reviews. Two reviewers posting in August 2010, each having posted at least 5 times on Trip Advisor, had different experiences at the San Simeon Pines. One reviewer described the room as open and airy. Another described their room as shabby, 1950's era. Out of 119 reviews, more people liked this beach hotel than didn't like it. Still, 26 people found the San Simeon to be "poor" or "terrible."

Have I finally found a "bad" oceanfront beach hotel in Cambria? After looking at reviews for many inns on the Cambria coast, all of them with mostly glowing reviews, I come to the Mariners Inn. On Trip Advisor this oceanfront lodging is rated #29 of 34 places to stay in Cambria. Usually a hotel will have just a few "terrible" reviews on Trip Advisor. In this case I saw 24 "terrible" reviews vs just 3 that rated the Mariner's Inn as excellent. I generally discount "terrible" reviews because they're often the result of a guest being miffed by a staff member. Then the guest sets out to complain about everything. I don't think that's the case with the Mariner's Inn. One person described it as "yucky." Another,"the worst hotel experience."

"There isn't particularly anything great or poor about this motel. The owner is friendly enough and you can't beat the location. The room just felt old and in need of a makeover. They don't have WiFi but you can jump on the neighboring motel's connection ( not a very strong signal though). One of the reviewers loved this Cambria oceanfront lodging because they could watch the elephant seals on the beach. Another loved it because there is a dog friendly beach nearby. Others find it a "romantic getaway." There are the usual couple of grumps. "The fireplace fan was too loud." "There's not much to do here when the sun goes down." A couple of miles north of Cayucos Hwy 1 passes through the mystical village of Cambria. Just past the village the highway begins to parallel the Pacific Ocean. Shoreline Inn oceanfront beach hotel in Cayucos is on the beach. So, it's a little puzzling that with many rave reviews Trip Advisor rates it as #5 of 8 places to stay in Cayucos. I looked at the "Terrible" reviews. They dealt with problems with staff and, in most cases, the reviewer had made only 1 or 2 reviews on Trip Advisor. This is always suspect to me. Could it be a competitor trying to disparage the hotel? Looking at the "Excellent" reviews, many were recent and the reviewers had made many reviews on Trip Advisor.

Here's the thing about Cayucos. It's a very small town. All of the lodging there is pretty close to the beach. No matter where you stay, it's an easy and pleasant walk to the beach. That being the case, Compare Rates at all the Cayucos Hotels.

Cayucos Beach Hotels - On the Beach Bed and Breakfast

Before I begin my review, a little about Cayucos. Along with Avila Beach, it is one of the most "undiscovered" beach towns on the California central coast. That's because Hwy 1 doesn't go through the town or by the beach. The town isn't far off the highway. You can see it. But the town doesn't look interesting from the highway. At this point on Hwy 1 people are headed north to Cambria, Hearst Castle, and the Big Sur. They're not getting off to investigate this town that is still looks like it did in the 50's. This is to your advantage. You can have a quiet relaxing stay on or near the beach.

Most of the people who stay at the On the Beach B&B love it. My gosh, it is on the beach. There are a couple of negative reviews on Trip Advisor. It appears that not all rooms are "ocean view" and several people thought the service was poor. One thing for sure, it's not a cottage where you rent a room and have a great breakfast served in the morning. On the Beach is really a hotel on the beach where you can have breakfast.

Joe Momma's Beach Stay is where I'd choose to stay in Avila Beach. There were only 8 reviews on Trip Advisor when I looked. 2 of the reviews were negative. You can't choose based on the ratio of positive to negative. You have to read the reviews. I liked what the positive people had to say about Joe Momma's. It's across the street from the beach. The units are condo style. Right over a espresso shop. I love cappuccinos. No daily maid service. I like that. For some of you, that may be a deal killer.

Avila Beach Oceanfront Beach Hotels- San Luis Bay Inn

I'm hard pressed to call the San Luis Bay Inn a beach hotel. This is one of those time share places where they rent out rooms that aren't taken by owners of the time share. On the plus side, you have a better chance of getting a room that is larger than the rooms in the couple of other beach hotels in Avila Beach. You might get a room with kitchen and living area. But are you on the beach? The bay is in front of the hotel. No beach there, but it's not far to the beach. Will you have an ocean view? If you do a Google satellite view you'll there are many more rooms without an ocean view. Trip Advisor ranks the San Luis as #5 of 5 Avila Beach hotels. Only two of those hotels are on the beach. Then there is Joe Mommas Beach Stay. I'll cover it in another blog.

The Lighthouse Suites at Avila Beach have an 85% approval rating in Trip Advisor. That's a little higher than the rating for the Inn at Avila Beach. Certainly the grounds are more attractive at the Lighthouse. It is a newer property. And you'll probably pay more. Again, there was a complaint about no air conditioning. This poor soul happened to be staying on the beach on one of those rare days when the temperature pushes into the 90's. According to him, "over 100 degrees." Other unhappy people complained about rude, uncaring staff.

The Inn at Avila Beach had 127 reviews on Trip Advisor when I looked. 75% of the reviewers recommend the Inn at Avila Beach. The people who love the Inn, love it because of it's location. The people who didn't like it, only a small number, said: old, rude staff person, no air conditioning. The "no air conditioning" comment always amazes me. Very few beach hotels have air conditioning. You don't need it. Open the windows. Let the sea breeze cool you. And old? Most beach hotels are old. The few newer ones will charge you a lot more.

Avila Beach is one of just two quiet little beach towns on the Central California coast. It's only about 3 miles off of Hwy 101. But, You can't see the beach town from Hwy 101. I've finished reviewing all of the oceanfront beach hotels that I found in Pismo Beach. My favorite is the Sea Gypsy. It's image is to the left. You can't be any more on the beach than the Sea Gypsy. Yes, they are an advertiser on our Beach Hotel website. But it's location on the beach and closeness to the fun stuff that Pismo Beach offers are ample reasons for choosing the Sea Gypsy as your place to stay in Pismo Beach.
